报告题目:Multiscale Sensing and Computational Simulations for Bridge Scour

Abstract

Bridge scour, which describes the process of soil erosion around bridge foundation, is a major cause of bridge failures. Existing design methods for bridge scour prediction are based on laboratory experimental data and simplified 1D or 2D computational models.  These lead to significant errors in bridge scour depth estimation, which either compromises the safety of bridge or makes the design to be overly conservative.  This presentation will introduce the recent progresses in my research group to advance bridge scour research and practice from both computational modeling and innovative sensing aspects.  In the sensing aspect, bio-turbulent flow sensor is being developed to help understanding the effects of flow turbulence on soil erosion. Innovative Time Domain Reflectometry sensors are designed for structural health monitoring of bridge scour under the field conditions for decision support.  Refinement further improves the resolution in scour detection.  In the modeling aspect, advanced 3D computational fluid dynamics (CFD) models are developed to study the influence of pier shapes on the vortex structures as well as to study the attack angle on flow fields.   Coupled CFD and DEM model was utilized to study the mechanism of soil erosion process. The final goal of this research is to integrate advanced sensors and computational simulations to build a holistic framework for bridge scour depth prediction and bridge failure risk management.

 Biosketch

Dr. Xiong (Bill) Yu is a professor at the Department of Civil Engineering, Case Western Reserve University. He also holds secondary appointments from a few other departments. Dr. Yu’s current research interests include geoengineering and geomaterials, multiphysics processes, innovative sensors, structural health monitoring, smart driving and working environment, intelligent systems, and sustainable and multifunctional materials. His research emphasizes the use of interdisciplinary approaches to advance the intelligent and durability of geosystem, civil infrastructure, energy and environmental systems. He is a recipient of a NSF CAREER award in 2009. He has published over 250 papers in journals and referred conference proceedings. He holds a number of U.S. patents and U.S. patent applications. He has graduated 9 PhD students, among whom 5 have received tenure track faculty positions at US Universities.  Dr. Yu is an active advocator of international collaborations. He is a member of U.S. delegates for academic exchanges with China, Japan, Germany, and UK. He serves on the editorial board of 4 journals. He is the chair of the Geo-Institute Engineering Geology and Site Characterization committee, which received the Geo-Institute Technical Committee of the Year award in 2014. He served as the Chair of Case School of Engineering Executive Committee, past Chair of CSE Promotion and Tenure Committee, Committee on Undergraduate Education.
